What is gusset pouch?

A gusset pouch is a type of flexible packaging (usually made from plastic film, laminated materials, foil, or paper) that includes gussets—folded or expanded panels on the sides or bottom—that allow the pouch to expand and hold more volume while still maintaining a compact, stable shape when filled.

How many types of gusset pouch are there? How to distinguish them?

A gusset pouch is a highly recognizable type of flexible packaging commonly used for retail products like coffee, dog food, and snacks. Its types can be distinguished by the presence of “side gussets” and “bottom gussets.”

Side Gusset Pouch

The identifying feature of this gusset pouch is on the sides of the bag: there are two pre-folded side gussets. After the bag is filled from the top, these two side gussets unfold, providing the gusset pouch with additional capacity. This can be further subdivided into two subtypes: “back-sealed” and “quad seal”.

Flat Bottom Pouch

The identifying features of this gusset pouch are twofold: it must have both”side gussets” and a” bottom gusset”to be called an flat bottom pouch. In addition to the two pre-folded side gussets, its bottom gusset is a flat bottom. Unlike the foldable gusset of a stand-up pouch, when this bag is filled from the top, its bottom gusset lays flat, giving the bag more internal volume. It is well suited for packaging large-capacity products but is not suitable for liquids.
